Cherished

Hand-painted canvas from an altered modeling image

Cherished grew out of my first nude photoshoot, at a time when both my body and my life had changed. After losing 150 pounds and going through a divorce, I was learning to recognize the person in front of the camera.

My body had changed faster than my perception of it. That photoshoot captured me in the space between the image I still carried of myself and the person I was beginning to see.

I turned that powerful moment into Cherished—a portrait of vulnerability, recognition, and the slow, personal work of learning to regard myself with love.

For this painting, I altered the modeling photograph, projected the image onto canvas, and painted it by hand. The photograph and the painting share that same moment in my life.
